Under the influence of various factors such as the global economic situation, supply and demand, and raw material prices, the price of molybdenum fluctuated more in 2025, with prices surging and falling back at the end of the year, but still showing a year-on-year increase.
In recent years, mining profits have remained high, leading to strong production enthusiasm. Molybdenum concentrate production increased year-on-year in 2025, but the increase lagged behind end-user demand. As end-user consumption increases annually, China's ferromolybdenum production has gradually increased, reaching 230,000 tons last year. This increased demand for molybdenum concentrate and reliance on imports has led to net imports of 60,000 tons of molybdenum in 2025 to meet domestic demand. The sharp price fluctuations in the US market at the beginning of 2026 triggered rapid price increases in Europe and Asia. China's heavy reliance on imports means that although domestic molybdenum concentrate production has increased year by year, especially in regions like Tibet, it is still insufficient to meet demand. Therefore, fluctuations in international molybdenum prices significantly impact domestic molybdenum prices.
The stainless steel market in 2025 exhibited a wide range of fluctuations, with high raw material prices leading to a passive increase in the price of molybdenum-containing steel products. The use of molybdenum in special steel has been increasing year by year, while ongoing regional conflicts have further increased molybdenum consumption as it is a crucial metal in the military industry. Intense supply-demand competition is expected to continue in 2026, with raw material suppliers likely to maintain market dominance.
